Roof Systems & Products

Attics and Structural Components
It's What You Don't See!

Cutaway of roof

The attic is the first component a proper roof system should address. When we do an estimate for a new roof or maintenance package, we include a written inspection of the attic. Why? From the attic we can inspect the nature of the deck or structural sheeting, (either oriented strand board, plywood, 1x8 etc.) and most importantly examine the ventilation and investigate any signs of moisture. Manufacturers are very strict on decking, installation and ventilation requirements being met, specifically to address warranty concerns.

Check out some venting work we did on a recent reroof. The venting can be seen along both sides of the gable end. (picture; opens in new window, close window after viewing

Underlayments

Underlayments are numerous and varied, but essentially fall into one of two categories being:

  • Waterproof
  • Water Resistant

Water Resistant

Our preference to the standard #30 and #15 underlayments is a special fibreglass reinforced hybrid known as "Roofer's Select". Heavier and highly water resistant, this underlayment contains 50% to 80% more asphalt than standard organic felts.

Inorganic fibreglass underlayments are also widely available. These underlayments are typically heavier and more fire resistant. We would recommend this underlayment to "beef-up" any shingle roof system and might recommend it purely as minimum manufacturer requirements.

Water Proof

Typically formed of rubberized polymers, they are most commonly known as "Peel & Stick". Removal of a backing exposes the adhesive surface which bonds permanently to roofs and parapets etc. Excellent for "freeze and thaw" action as well as wind driven rain extending excellent protection where it is needed or wanted.
